Meaning & History
Variant of Dis Pater, derived from Latin dives, meaning "wealthy", itself probably derived from divus, meaning "godlike, divine". The occurrence of the name Dis together with the title Pater (meaning "father") may be due to association with Jupiter. In Roman mythology, this name belonged to a god of soil fertility and mineral wealth, later associated with the underworld. He was equated with Pluto, Hades and Orcus.
