Meaning & History
The name of a naiad of a spring of the river Sperkheios on Mount Othrys in Malis (northern Greece). She was loved by the god Poseidon, who transformed her sisters into poplar-trees in order to seduce her unhindered. Her name is ultimately derived from the elements διον (dion) meaning "divine" and πάτρα (patra) meaning "father, family".
