Dietrich von Hildebrand was a famous Catholic philosopher who was sentenced to death by the Third Reich for his vocal anti-Nazism. He fled Germany in 1938 and spent two years in hiding in France. He escaped to the US in 1940, whereupon he spent the rest of his life writing and teaching at Fordham University in NY.
