This name became very popular in the USA after Admiral George Dewey had a huge success in Manilla Bay in 1898. Even baby girls got the name! Wow! Here is a poem that was also very popular at the time:O DEWEY was the morning upon the first of May. And Dewey was the Admiral down in Manila Bay; And Dewey were the Regent's eyes, them orbs of royal blue! And Dewey feel discouraged? I Dew not think we Dew.Also of note: "Dewey Defeats Truman" was an incorrect banner headline on the front page of the Chicago Daily Tribune (later Chicago Tribune) on November 3, 1948, the day after incumbent United States president Harry S. Truman won an upset victory over Republican challenger and New York governor Thomas E. Dewey in the 1948 presidential election. It was famously held up by Truman at a public appearance following his successful election, smiling triumphantly at the error.Dewey is more commonly heard as a last name. Or nickname.

Surname of George Dewey, a very well-known public figure during the Spanish-American War. Dewey led the Americans in the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898. It's possible that he was the cause of the spike in the name's popularity that year. The name George also took a (much less noticeable) jump up in 1898.
Dewey Denouement is the sub sub librarian in "The Penultimate Peril" by Lemony Snicket. It's book 12 in the "A Series of Unfortunate Events" book series.Dewey is also a main character in "Unshelved", a cartoon strip for librarians.I have come to associate the name Dewey with libraries, I quite like it.
Dewey was the name of that sweet little library cat, wasn't it? I don't like it on a person at all, but it's so cute on animals. I dunno why. It just suits some of them.
