Meaning & History
Queen Deuteria of the Franks was a consort of King Theudebert I. She came from an aristocratic Gallo-Roman family from Auvergne. She was related to Sidonius Apollinaris, Saint Avitus, and Emperor Avitus. In Septimania, she was married with a daughter, Adia. The area was attacked by Theudebert I, who fell in love with her. He called her to court, and she brought her daughter with her. However, Deuteria's husband was still alive, and Theudebert was engaged to marry a Lombard princess, Wisigard. It's unknown whether Deuteria and Theudebert were ever married.According to Gregory of Tours, Deuteria had her daughter drowned in 536, in fear of her becoming a rival over Theudebert. Afterward, the aristocracy forced Theudebert to expel Deuteria and marry Wisigard. It is said that he wished to recall Deuteria after Wisigard's death in 540, but did not dare to.
