Meaning & History

Either from Old English dīere "dear, precious" (see Deorwine), or dēor "wild animal, deer" (see Deorswiþ). This was possibly the name of a late-10th-century poet who created the The Lament of Deor, a poem consisting of a reflection on his misfortune.
