Meaning & History

Etymology uncertain. Possibly means "the slaughterer", derived from Egyptian dn meaning "to sever, cut off". Other suggested meanings include "he who brings the water" and "he who spreads (his (falcon’s) wings)". This was the Horus name of a pharaoh who ruled during the First Dynasty of Egypt, the first to use the title ‘King of Upper and Lower Egypt’.
