Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek noun δῆμος (demos) meaning "people" as well as "country, land" combined with the Greek adjective αἰνετός (ainetos) meaning "praiseworthy". The latter word is ultimately derived from the Greek noun αἴνη (aine) meaning "praise, fame" (see Aeneas).
