Meaning & History
Derived from Late Latin defendere meaning "to defend, to protect". The soldier-saint Defendens of Thebes (Italian: San Defendente di Tebe) was, according to Christian tradition, a member of the Theban Legion, and thus martyred at Agaunum. He is venerated as a martyr by the Catholic Church.
