This is the name of the protagonist of the fairy tale The Enchanted Canary. Desire is a young nobleman who falls in love with a golden-skinned princess named Zizi. (The original French version includes accent marks, while Andrew Lang's translation omits them.)
Desire (no accent marks) is the name of a queen in Robin Hobb's 'Realm of the Elderlings' series of novels. She has one son with King Shrewd whom she names Regal.
I've heard this name given to girls in reference to the English word "Desire". It sounds tacky and trashy on a girl, but fine on a boy as long as he's French.
