In South Africa in the 1980s there was a rugby player called Darius Botha; he is Afrikaans, and his more famous brother, Ignatius Botha, known as Naas, seems to suggest that the parents liked -us names. Darius is pronounced DAH ree uhs, where uh is a schwa.
Darius III of Persia, famously known for his part in the battle of Issus 333B. C against Alexander the Great. Can be seen depicted on a mosaic in the house of the Faun in Pompeii.
In the novel series "House of Night" one of the characters has this name. He's a strong and powerful warrior. The only one who isn't under the influence of the school's headmistress. He's following Zoey Blackbird. This is a very nice character. He's a real man, macho and all those things, but he has also some soft spots in his character. The name by the way is really liked by me. In my opinion, this name was a good choice for this warrior. Can't say why, but sometimes you can feel that a name is just perfect for a character.
The only Darius that comes to mind is Darius Danesh, who was turned away from Pop Idol, to return again the following year (with less hair) and became a hit! (For a while anyway)
