This was the first name of my mother's grandfather, Colbert Ray Lott. Except, he apparently pronounced it "CAHR-bert," not "COHL-bert." Maybe it had to do with them having deep roots in Mississippi, but I find it fascinating.
Certainly not famous but this is the name of the Fairy King in Thumbelina (1994), which is where I first heard it. I don’t think it’s bad at all! Nickname could be Cole, Colby or Collie.
I just found this name today! I quite like it even though it's "dated". I actually prefer this over Albert, ever popular in the U.S.A. and names similar to it: Gilbert, Delbert, Elbert, Sigbert, etc. It's very manly and mature.
Stephen Colbert.

I really like this name, I think it should be used more often. :-)
I would name my kid after Stephen Colbert if it wouldn't get me so many confused stares.
The name Colbert originated in Normandy and was brought to England during the Normand Conquest of 1066. The last name can also be found in Scotland. The name means "bright champion."
The name is of French and Germanic origin. Stephen Colbert uses the French pronunciation of the name ("kol-BER") but has stated some of his siblings use the Germanic pronunciation ("kol-BURT").
I think the name sounds funny, like you would name a kid that!
It's his last name, but the man known for bringing the word "truthiness" back into common, everyday speech is known as "Stephen Colbert."
Stephen Colbert is actually of Irish decent, I wonder how that surname got there.
