Meaning & History
Means "circumcision" in Spanish. This is given in reference to the circumcision of Jesus, as recorded in the Gospel of Luke. This event is traditionally viewed as the first time the blood of Christ was shed and thus the beginning of the process of the redemption of man; it is also seen as a demonstration that Christ was fully human, and of his obedience to Jewish law. The Feast of the Circumcision of Christ is celebrated on January 1. Since 2014 this name has been banned in the Mexican state of Sonora.
