Meaning & History

From the English word for the insect, derived from Latin cicada meaning "tree-cricket". The insect lives underground, nourishing itself on tree roots, for as long as 17 years before emerging. The cicada has become a queer symbol, leading some transgender and non-binary people to adopt this as their new given name.
