Meaning & History
Used by American singer Diana Ross for her daughter born 1975. According to Ross, it originated as a misspelling of the word chutney, which refers to a type of condiment, and is derived from Hindi चाटना (chāṭnā) "to lick, to eat with appetite".Ross stated: 'Friends kept suggesting popular names like Courtney, but so many girl babies were getting that. I suddenly thought of something I liked very much — chutney. Only I didn’t know how to spell it — I put a ‘d’ where the ‘t’ should have been on the birth certificate. And that’s how my little girl became Chudney!'
