Meaning & History
Latinized form of Χρυσότελος (Chrysotelos), which should be a corruption of the rare name Χρυσοτέλης (Chrysoteles), which consists of the Greek elements χρυσός (chrysos) meaning "gold" and τέλος (telos) meaning "purpose, result, completion".However, it should be noted that at least one source claims that the name is actually derived from Greek χρυσότερος (chrysoteros) meaning "more golden". If that is true, then Chrysotelos is again a corruption, but then of what should originally be Χρυσότερος (Chrysoteros). This name was borne by an obscure saint from the 3rd century AD. He was a priest who was martyred in either Babylon or Persia on the orders of the Roman emperor Decius. His feast day is on 22 April (Roman Catholic), 30 July (Eastern Orthodox) and 7 October (Greek Orthodox). In the Greek Church, the saint is known as Chrysotelis, which is the modern Greek form of the previously mentioned name Chrysoteles.
