Derived from the Italian noun cavalcante meaning "postilion", which in turn is derived from the Italian verb cavalcare meaning "to ride a horse".A notable bearer of this name was the Italian Epicurean philosopher Cavalcante de' Cavalcanti (c. 1220-c. 1280). He also appears as a character in the poem Divine Comedy written by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri (c. 1265-1321).
