Meaning & History
Of debated origin and meaning. Some scholars argue that Cataldo might be an Italian adoption and adaption of Irish Cathal and Cathlarm via a corruption into Cathald by way of association with the Germanic element -ald "old". Others theorize a derivation from the Germanic elements hadu/hatu "battle, combat" and wald "power", while a last group of academics assume a corruption of Gaidoaldo.
