I personally don't understand how this name sounds 'masculine' to everybody else, personally it reminds me of a beautiful older-fashioned young woman. I think the reason everyone associates it with older women is because the name is outdated, but for that reason of its unpopularity nowadays I like it even more. If I have a daughter I will definitely consider this name.
It makes me think of an old heavyset grumpy woman.
Why do some people hate this name it's literally not that bad. Sure it's considered dated nowadays but there's nothing wrong with that plus the name Brenda has some really cool meanings.

Brenda was an ahead-of-her-time reheaded reporter who had exotic adventures and was in love with "mystery man," Basil St. John. The comic strip ended in 2011.

The latter, which she co-wrote, was later widely popularized when it became a Top Ten hit for Blood, Sweat & Tears. She left Motown after four years, at the age of 22, and largely retired from the music industry until the 1990s, after her recordings had become popular on the British "Northern soul" scene.
This is probably my favorite name for a girl beginning with the letter B! Brenda’s meaning is also to die for; such a powerful, strong meaning. I don’t care that it sounds “outdated”.

A pretty name but terribly dated. I do love the character, Brenda Lee Johnson, from the TV show The Closer.
Well, Brenda is a strong name for a strong woman! Good name! Yes, it feels little bit too harsh, but why not, it looks strong, so some harsh sound is good for it. Fits for different age woman. I like it!
I like Brenda. Brenda is one of those names that are not Italian but that fit our style. We use the masculine form of it (Brando) but not Branda as 'branda' means "cot".Despite this association I link Brenda with 'brandy'. It gives me a solid, warm vibe. Something elegant and chic.Brenda means "sword", a neat simple meaning. Brenda is short, it doesn't need any nickname and it's simple to write and pronounce.
