Meaning & History

Derived from Old English bregu "ruler" (compare Breguswið) and wine "friend". This was the name of a medieval Archbishop of Canterbury, the successor of Cuthbert. After his death in 764, Bregowine was considered a saint and a vita (or hagiographical life) about him was written in the 12th century.
