Meaning & History
Short form of Fortebraccio, a nickname that was also used as a given name in medieval Italy. Nowadays it solely exists as both a descriptive and a patronymic surname. The best known bearer of this name was the Italian military leader Braccio da Montone (1368-1424), who was born as Andrea Fortebracci (also found written as Fortebraccio). In his case, the name was essentially a nickname, but his nephew Braccio I Baglioni (1419-1479) was named after him and so in that instance it was an actual given name.
