This name is very dated in the Arab world, and even then it was only used by Christians. Now the Christians name their children French and Greek names. Needless to say, this is one of my favorite names despite it's datedness and exclusiveness amongst christians (me being a muslim). I hope to name one of my sons "Boutros" in the future. Maybe I can bring it back to popularity, who knows?
All Patriarchs of the Maronite Church (Lebanese Catholics) assume the name Boutros as a middle name after being granted leadership by the Vatican. E.g. Bechara Boutros al-Nahi, Nasrallah Boutros Sfier.
This name is mostly Coptic, meaning it is mainly used by Christians living in the Arab world. As such, 'Coptic' should be added to the usage of this name. [noted -ed]
