I moved from Portland, Oregon to Boaz, Alabama a couple years ago & have wondered where the name originated from. I am Native American & am not that familiar with the Bible other than what I learned in Sunday school as a child but since I practice the spirituality of my ancestors rather than following organized religion I was curious what the name meant & where it came from. This site was very helpful in educating me as to its historical significance. However moving to the south where there is a church on every corner, practically & nearly everyone is a conservative republican, I am not at all surprised to find it is a biblical name. Thank you for letting me know where my town's name comes from.
Hitchcock's Dictionary of Bible names gives the meaning of Boaz as "in strength."Boaz, Obed and Ruth are mentioned in the lineage of Jesus in Matthew 1:5. (The King James version of Matthew 1:5 spells Boaz as "Booz." The Greek form of Boaz is as follows: βοοζ
It's quite an interesting name, I'm starting to like it more and more. And though it has a strong Biblical association, it's not like you're naming your child Delilah.
The more I look at this name, the more I like it. It sounds cool, has the very workable nickname "Bo," and the Boaz from the Bible was respectable and worth honoring. He was an ancestor of Christ, too. I'm definitely adding this to my list of boy names.
My son is called Boaz and we often shorten it to Bo. He has a very gentle nature like his Biblical namesake. It is not a common name in the UK but I'm told it is very common in Israel.

This would be a difficult name to live up to! In the Bible, Boaz is the perfect husband and gentleman.

Except for being Ruth's husband, the name Boaz is also the south (left) pillar for Solomon's temple in I Kings 7.
Boaz was NOT the first to marry outside the faith. Ruth had married Naomi's son, who was a Jew, BEFORE she married Boaz. That, and she had already adopted the Jewish faith herself long before she met Boaz.
