The first thing I think of is the singer -- if you don't choose to associate your child with Bjork (sorry, I couldn't type it with the accent), the meaning is somewhat unusual and simple but does have a profound meaning: 'birch tree'. I like it for everyone, girls AND boys. I don't think it should be only a Scandinavian name.

In Sweden it's normally not used as a first name, but it's a common family name.
Most people pronounce this name incorrectly as "byork" so that it rhymes with "York", but the correct pronunciation is "byerk" so that it rhymes with work.

Björk means birch tree not only in Icelandic but in Swedish as well, and in Norwegian (only spelled with the Norwegian ø).
