From Turkish berk and Mongolian бэрх (berkh) both meaning "strong, firm" or "difficult, hard", derived from Old Turkic bérk. This was the name of a ruler of the Mongol Golden Horde from 1257-1266. In Turkish, it is both masculine and feminine, while it was solely masculine in Mongolian.
