In turn, it is derived from the Turkish military title beg meaning "chieftain, master".The given name Begtabeg is best known for being the name of the eponymous ancestor of the Georgian noble family of Begtabegishvili, who lived in the 17th century. He was a capable scribe and calligrapher, whose best known work is his manuscript of the medieval Georgian epic The Knight in the Panther's Skin.
