Derives from the Basque word begoina meaning "the lower foot (of Mount Artxanda)". The name is given after Nuestra Señora de Begoña (“Our Lady of Begoña”), referred to the Virgin Mary, patron of Bilbao. In fact, Begoña is a district in the highest part of Bilbao.
