Meaning & History
Means "lucky; fortunate" derived from the Arabic roots ب-خ-ت (b-ḵ-t) ultimately from the Ancient Persian word *bagta- meaning “assigned; allotted; fate”. Bakhita (religious name Giuseppina, 1869–1947), was a Sudanese-Italian Canossian religious sister who lived in Italy for 45 years, after having been a slave in Sudan. In 2000 she was declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.
