Meaning & History
Hellenized version of the name Azat, which is a form of Azad. This is the name of a fourth century saint and martyr who served King Shapur II as a eunuch. He enjoyed a favored position as the king’s confidant. During the king’s persecution of Christians, Azades confessed that he was a Christian, and was subsequently executed. This deeply grieved the king. Azades is commemorated on April 14.
