Meaning & History
From the Roman cognomen Auxilius, which was derived from the Latin noun auxilium meaning "help, aid, assistance". The noun itself is ultimately derived from the Latin verb auxilior meaning "to give help, to aid, to assist". A bearer of this name was the 5th-century saint Auxilius of Ireland, although in his case his name may possibly have been a latinized form of his original Gaelic given name.
