Meaning & History

From Ancient Greek αὐτός (autós) "self" and possibly λήκυθος (lḗkuthos) "lekythos", a kind of pottery flask with a narrow neck, used in Ancient Greece for storing oil. This was the name of an Indian slave of Favorinus, a Roman sophist and skeptic philosopher.
