Athenais was the original name of Aelia Eudocia (c. 401–460), wife of the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II. She was born in Athens and named Athenais after the city's protector, the goddess Pallas Athena. She converted to Christianity before marrying the emperor, and took the name Aelia Eudocia in honour of his mother Aelia Eudoxia.
