Meaning & History
Derived from Greek Ᾰ̓θῆναι (Athenai) meaning "Athens (city)" (ultimately from the name of the goddess Athena) and either ἀγορά (agora) meaning "assembly, marketplace" or ἀγορεύω (agoreuo) meaning "to speak, proclaim, orate; to speak publicly". This name was borne by several ancient Greeks, such as statesman Athenagoras of Syracuse (5th century BC) and general Athenagoras of Macedon (2nd century BC).
