Meaning & History
From Guanche *arəmis meaning "prey, trophy, loot", literally "arrest, seizure". This was the name of the last aboriginal king of the island of Hierro (present-day Canary Islands, Spain), who was ousted, captured and enslaved by the French conquistador Jean de Béthencourt in 1405. The Canarian-born Spanish footballer Armiche Ortega (1988-) is a known modern bearer of this name.
