I actually like this name quite a bit. It sounds strong but fun. I think it would be a great name to have!

So childish. Please remember that you are naming an adult - little Arlo will one day be 50 years old with a name that only suits a baby.

I don't like this name at all. The fact that it's popular with hipsters puts me off to it. What's worse is that now people are even giving it to girls. I honestly can't picture a girl named Arlo.
Arlo is Spanish, English/German & Italian in origin. In Spanish, it's a nature name that means evergreen barberry tree, adaptable and hardy. In Anglo-Saxon and Germanic origin, it is a derivative of "Harlow" which means "fortified hill". In Italy, Arlo is similar to "Carlo", and can be a nickname for such, which is the Italian variant of Charles. The sound of this name makes me think of someone who has a mellow personality and is artsy and down-to-earth.
I like it as a good name for a child regardless of sex. Not too rah rah masculinity and not too cutesy. Just a nice name for a nice child. It's also simple and easy to spell.
Someone told me it is not uncommon as a contemporary name in Australia. I think in the U.S. it is considered more of a regional southern/country. No negative connotations. Rare.
No longer just masculine. Former 'Gossip Girl' actress and singer Leighton Meester and her husband, American actor and musician Adam Brody, recently welcomed a baby DAUGHTER named Arlo Day Brody, on August 4th.
