Due to a videogame franchise I've been working on, this name makes me think of that silver furry man who fires rapid punches while screaming ARA! ARA! ARA!
Ara Keghetsig (meaning Ara the Handsome) in Armenian mythology ruled the Kingdom of Ararat, known in legend for being so beautiful that the Assyrian queen Samiramis waged war with Armenia for him. But during the war Ara Keghetsig was killed, but the queen did not believe this and requested from her soldiers to go and find him from the dead. After finding Ara's body she was so devastated and she said "If I can not have him even the earth doesn't deserve him" and she ordered her soldiers to hang the body from her palace tower and let the birds eat his body!
Ara Gallant (Born: 1932, Died: 1990) was an American hairstylist for Vogue, and later a photographer.

This is also a type of bird, with six genera (one with the scientific name Ara, while the rest are also known collectively as "Ara" in many languages) and about seventeen species. It does, however, have a completely different origin.
Ara is the name of a constellation. Ara (AIR-uh) means Alter.

In Latin, 'Ara' means 'altar', the flat surface on which offerings were made to the gods. "An alter" does not exist. 'Alter' is certainly a verb meaning 'to change', and it sounds like 'altar', but there the resemblance ends.Sorry to be a nit-picker, but accuracy matters.
My name is Ara and I was always told that Ara was the Greek goddess of vengeance and destruction. That's what my Mom's baby names book said from the 70's. And Ara means "an altar".

Ara is Latin for alter, and is the name of a constellation in the southern hemisphere. Also, in the mythology of the Iban from Borneo, Ara was a bird-shaped creation diety who hatched the sky from an egg, and helped form humans from soil before bringing them to life with bird song.
