Notable bearers of this name include the Greek sophist and rhetorician Aphthonius of Antioch (4th century AD) and the Roman writer Aelius Festus Aphthonius (4th century AD). Saint Aphthonius was a Persian Christian and ordained priest. He was arrested and slain for the faith during the reign of King Shapur II.
