Probably Hebrew, and may mean "my strength". 'In the Bible it occurs only once, in a genealogy... It appears regularly at Princeton in the period 1810-60, but not at Harvard. Apparently Amzi represents a development in the Middle Colonies, one which did not reach New England. The contrary is more usual.' A famous bearer was Amzi Chapin, a shape-note music composer and singing master from New England in the early 1800s.
