Meaning & History
From Greek ἀμύντωρ (amyntôr) meaning "defender, protector", which is a derivative of ἀμύνω (amynô) "to keep off, defend oneself". (Compare Amyntas.) This name belonged to several characters in Greek mythology. It was also borne by a 4th-century BC Macedonian aristocrat who was the father of Alexander's general and close companion Hephaestion Amyntoros.
