Meaning & History

Amphitheos is the name of a character in Aristophanes' Acharnians, who claims to be immortal. This is alluded to in his name, which purportedly means "divine ancestry on his father's and his mother's side". However, his claims are false, comedically so to the intended audience. Purportedly, his name is modeled off another Greek word, which was a term often used in the context of ritual.
