I have some use in my family of this name, Canadian French Catholic. It was most common in the 1700s from the records I've seen.
Amable Tastu, (born Sabine Casimire Amable Voïart; 1795 - 1885) was a 19th-century French poet and writer (femme de lettres).
Spanish pronunciation: a-MA-ble.
Also used in Spanish. In Spain, there are 1,328 male bearers and 402 female bearers (source: Instituto Nacional de Estadística).
This doesn’t remind me of “am able”, but instead “amiable”.
Although this name is usually male, it has been used for females as well. [noted -ed]
Looks like amiable, which just makes me think of SAT studying.
Looks like amiable.
One of my ancestors was called Francois Amable Martin. He was born in Quebec, Canada in 1759.
Amable in Spanish means friendly!
Perhaps related to (or even a mistranscription of) Aimable, a fairly common French name before 1940, for males and females.
Honestly, I don't think this name really exists. Not anymore, anyway, or not in France.
