Meaning & History
Epithet of the Greek goddess Artemis which was derived from the name of the river god Alpheios, who loved her. Artemis Alpheiaia was worshipped at Letrini in Elis and on the island of Ortygia near Syracuse; she also shared an altar with Alpheios at Olympia. Under this name she was associated with the wearing of masks, largely due to the legend that Artemis and her nymphs escaped the pursuit of Alpheios by covering their faces.
