Meaning & History
Derived from ἀλεξιάρης (alexiares), which is the masculine form of the Greek feminine noun ἀλεξιάρη (alexiare) meaning "she that guards from death and ruin". It consists of the Greek verb ἀλέξω (alexo) meaning "to defend" as well as "to help" combined with the Greek noun ἀρή (are) meaning "bane, ruin". Also compare the name of the Greek war god Ares, which is thought to be etymologically related.In Greek mythology, this was the name of one of the divine sons of the Greek hero Herakles and the goddess Hebe, to whom he was wed following his apotheosis. Alexiares and his brother Anicetus may have been considered gatekeepers of Olympus, alongside their father.
