One of the greatest names of all time. Great meaning, history, pronunciation, feminine forms, and nicknames.

My name is Alexander and I'm a girl. I really don't understand why my parents chose this name for me when there are feminine alternatives of the same name like Alexandrina, Alexandria and of course, Alexandra. Growing up with this name was difficult since most would automatically assume my name belonged to a boy rather than a girl. Needless to mention the surprise on their faces when they found out. I think Alexander would be fine on a guy who asserts an air of confidence. Although, on me as a girl it just feels awkward.
My older brother has this name and he dislikes it a lot. When he turns eighteen, he plans on changing it to a more "cooler" name. I think it is ok, not great, but ok.

Not really a fan. The feminine variant looks much nicer.

I shall admit that Alexander would not be on my top list of male names that I like. However, I do not see anything that would connote a negative impression of it that previous comments below would blatantly state.

It's an awful and ugly name, I'm sorry. It just is.

Too overused. Not as great of a name anymore unfortunately.

It's too common to find someone with the name Alex. I think that takes away from the uniqueness and makes it unoriginal. The name does sound like it's for a guy, but it does sound boring and nerdy.

Despite the name sounding masculine, all the Alexanders/Alex I have known are nothing like what the name means/stands for. People in the past who bear the name, like Alexander the Great, align more with this name. Nowadays the Alexanders are either foolish/goofy, distracted, unrefined, not loyal, and definitely not brave. The name meaning "defender of men" doesn't match with Alexanders today. These Alexanders wouldn't stand up for their friends and sometimes family. No offense but most of them are cowards. Just speaking the truth based on my experience.

Personally I think this name is pretty cool, not only I have a character named Alex/Alexander, it just has a nice sound to it I guess lol.

This name sounds classic and mature to my ears. It also does not hurt to know that it is an uncommon name in my area. An added bonus if I do say so myself.

I don't understand the "boring" comments, it's still a strong, mature and timeless name even if it's overused.
I find the name Alexander very masculine and attractive. I can't help but expect certain things of others because of feelings I have about the names they bear, and I must say that I expect good things from any guy who carries this name. It would suit almost any male.

Such an interesting and handsome name that I love to pieces. :D.

Such a versatile name! I can imagine anyone of any age or nationality or profession named Alexander. And the amount of nicknames also adds to its flexibility - Al, Alex, Alex, Xander. I would consider it as a first name, but would definitely use it as a middle name for my first son - boys in my family always have it as either a first or middle name.
This is my N.º1 boy's name! I love longer names that can be shortened- such as my top girl's name Madeleine, but that's just my preference. I only know 2 Alex's- so to me it's not too popular- but maybe that's just me. I think it is a strong and handsome name and the (inevitable) nickname Alex is even better. The reason I love longer names which can be shortened is that it gives the choice to the name bearer!
I think Alexander is very handsome. My brother's real name is Alexander but he goes by Alex. By the way Alex is a great nickname for Alexander. The meaning is defender of men. Alexander the Great is also a famous bearer.
I prefer the spelling with "ks" - Aleksander. I don't know why, just like how it looks.

I think Alexander is a pretty good name. It's strong, timeless, classy, rich in history and ages beautifully. It sounds very regal and elegant. I love the meaning of the name (“defender of humankind”), too. It also offers the reliable nicknames Alex, Sandy and Xander, which are nice.
Alexander and Alexandra can be names for boy and girl twins. Nickname for the boy could be Alex while the girl could be called Alexa or Lexie. I love both names because those fit people of any age. Handsome and pretty respectively.
I love this name! One of my favorites and I also like the feminine version of Alexandra. It sounds strong and handsome, but I don’t like the meaning much.
I named my son Allygzanda, which is more unique than the common and boring spelling Alexander.

This is by FAR my absolute favorite boy's name! It's long, yet you could make it into a short and simple nickname, Alex. Also, it sounds so noble, brave, and handsome! I just can't understand those people who hate this name! To all the future moms, definitely name your son Alexander! Never worry about not suiting a particular age! It fits a baby, child, teen, adult, and old man! I'd rate it 1,000 stars out of 5!
This is my favourite name in the world. I don't care how common it is, it's like music to my ears.

I have nothing really against this name per-say but it's became too popular. Like I knew some women who were pregnant with boys who all planned to name their son Alexander. I prefer the female Alexandra more to Alexander.

Best name ever! All Alexanders I've met are handsome and noble.
Really strong, handsome, masculine name, and as many said, you could easily go by the nickname Alex if there are any concerns. One of my favorite boy's names.
I think Alexander is a cool name and I like the easy go to nick name, Alex. Overall can't really complain about it.

I love this name and it's common here in Scotland - older Alex's go by 'Sandy', Younger ones tend to just be Alex, I would consider using it, good name.

Well, while this is a classic name with a lot of history, not bad, however it is a really popular name, in many countries it is one of the most popular male names, so it is a little bit annoying because many have it, feels too common, just boring. And Alex is no better than this.
I don't like it. I'm not a fan of the "defending men" meaning. Gag me on this overused name that is always ultimately shortened to the digestible, boring Alex, or the trying-too-hard-at-being-hip Xander.
I kind of like Alexandrite better even though it’s feminine.

This is one of my personal favorite masculine names. I love the long and rich history of this name, as well as its meaning. All around awesome name, in my opinion.
Love it - What a strong classical name, and many men with this name have gone on to become great figures.

One of my favourite names. Worn by Kings and Popes, and of course Alexander the Great, so has great status. Always been very popular in Scotland compared to the rest of Britain. Seems to be getting ever more popular in the US and could break into the top 5 in a few years. It can suit any age and is the most masculine name out there in my opinion. Brilliant name.

Good gosh, I love this name! Another name for the prince Paris, and Alexander the Great - it's almost too good. If only it hadn't peaked in the mid nineties... its recent popularity takes away from how wonderful this name is. When you think of Alexander, unfortunately it's hard to think only of the Macedonian. Makes me think more of the weird kid in my high school science class. Alex of course is the standard, boring nickname. Xander is so awful and pompous. Alexander is so beautiful by itself - such a shame. Alexander...

A classic! Much better than all those dumb trendy names that are popular nowadays.
This is my younger brother's middle name and I love it, but I don't like how common it is now. I'd consider using it but I think I'd probably go with the alternative of Oleksandr. Still a really cute name though :)
They’re not the same because of their different gender. I like Alexandra because it sounds posh and royal, but Alexander sounds plain and boring, just because there’re tons of Alexanders around me. I think that’s the reason. Also I just feel it’s too feminine, like Andromeda or Aphrodite... Anyway, it’s only my vision :)
Alexander is such a classic and wise name! My husband is an Alexander, and when I met him in middle school I immediately loved the name. We named our 3 year old son William Alexander, and call him Bill. Growing up together, I called my then best friend, Zammy and I still do today. A beautiful name with such goofy potential. Oh, and of course I love Alexander Hamilton.
My full first name is Alex, and I don't consider it to be a short version of any name. There are reasons in people's families for naming their kid just Alex.

I love this name! It's so cute and mature! But ever since I watched my brother play Amnesia (the horror game) I've been kinda scared of the name, lol. I try not to think about that though.
My first name is just Alex and I love it better than the name Alexander. To me Alex is more of a masculine name because the name Alexander has the name Alexa in it which most people named Alexander never mention, and they use the name Alex to sound masculine.

To be fully masculine isn't always a good thing. If you have other siblings, especially growing up in a small house, this can cause tension as boys tend to fight for male dominance. To have some balance in your life can make a more peaceful environment to be in.

Born Alexander but grew up as Alex until an adult when I started going by Alexander. Used Alexander as my son's middle name and he's happy with it. I love my name and I fit the meaning to a T. Ladies... come get some!
My name is Alexander Thomas and I am a grown ass man at 42. I love my name and ladies typically will tell me they love it too and for whatever reason they find it sexy. When I was a boy I did not like my name but it grew on me. I went by Alex as a boy & Alexander as an adult and even named my son Payton Alexander. I find it's got a certain level of distinction to it.
I'm starting to find out there are girls named Alexander. If you think you would name a boy Alexandra, and he would get teased, well same thing for a girl getting the name Alexander. The reason girls get these weak names is because they work well with humans with high pitched voices. Like women would get the name Frankie and young boys would get that name until they’re 12. Older men don’t have high pitch voices. So weak names would look bad on them!

As Alex is more often used as a girl’s nickname, making it unisex, I like that the name Alexander offers other nicknames, such as Xander.

This is a great name! It has good nicknames (Alex, Al, Xander, Lex), it has an awesome meaning, and it sounds really nice. I'm not sure if it's overused though.
One of my siblings goes by Alex. It's nice though, but it's also cool if you just be Alexander. Xander is a nice alternative to Alex, and definitely masculine.

I see no reference to Lex Luther or to the son of Worf...

Oh how amazing my name is. I am ALEXANDER ANGELO from the Philippines. Bearing that name gives me a lot of passion and care for more people in my homeland that suits the real meaning of ALEXANDER. My Grandmother gave me that wonderful and powerful name as a boy. Many people look at me and become inspired by me because of the essence of this name and I thank God for my name because it gives me a lot of peace and determination to advocate for human rights and charity for people, especially children of our modern days and old people who are very unfortunate and disabled.
Alexander. The. Great. This is a true meaning of the name. I find Alexander to be a professional exciting thrilling name! This name is eccentric and even though it is a common name everyone should have this name. Most recently I have been nicknamed: Alex, AJ, Alexa, Zander, Zandy, and a favorite is Sasha. Each of these nicknames represents me as a character. Also people who posses this name have a lot a sass, they are also very quick witted. I am named Alexander because my father was Howard and made sure I was not just named Alex. Just know that Alexander's are known to be masculine and every Alexander has great potential to be an amazing person. Hence Alexander the Great! Stay chill my homies and remember Alexander's rule the world! Who rules the world? ALEXANDER! PEACE OUT MY FAM!
I don't like that it's so common, because other than that I think it sounds like quite a cool name. It kind of lacks a real flavor to it, since it's so overused, but I simply enjoy saying it so much that I can forgive it. I prefer the nickname Alec above anything else, as Alex is as boring as dirt and Xander sounds too childish to me.
It's indeed a very old-fashioned name but is still extremely popular nowadays... one of the few names that last for thousands of years and never get old.
An extremely versatile name, bold, strong and liberal. I may not be too bold, too strong, or too liberal, but I'd say I am proud of my name. I commonly go by Alex (it's easier on my classmates' tongues), but on formal occasions Alexander is my preference. It cuts a more formal edge in my opinion.
Alexander is an awesome name. I love it because it's bold and strong. It's also a good pairing name with my favorite girl name, Anastasia. Anastasia & Alexander sound perfect with each other. I love it and it's super special to me. I can't wait to have my own Alexander. The only setback with Alexander is trying to find an equally stunning middle name if you just love Alexander as a middle name then Nathaniel Alexander would be perfect. Alexander is an awesome name. It has multiple nicknames, Lex, Al, Alex and Xander. It's gorgeous and I can't wait to use this either this name or Ethan as my first son's name.
My name is Alexander and I love my name from Al to Alex. Different variations in different settings and situations, I am Alexander at work Al to my family and Alex to my friends. I also have an elderly friend who has called me Alec for as long as I've known him, it is a very versatile name.
There are far too many people named Alex in the world, whether they be male or female. Though I guess Sandy is alright, it reminds me too much of a girl's name... so just Alexander for me, thanks. Plus, it reminds me of the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (which apparently is being adapted into a movie).
This name is awesome! I'm pretty sure people with the name Alexander live up to the awesomeness of their name. An example would be Han Alexander (hanthelion) on Tumblr, she is so cool!
I like the name but if I named my son Alexander I would prefer Alexander and not Alex or Xander; however it does age nicely from Alex as a child to Alexander as an adult. It is a traditional, masculine and handsome name, but I dislike the fact that is becoming trendy again, although that is also good.
I don't like the name Alexander, but I do like just plain old Alex (I tend to like a lot of shorter names). I also really like the name Alex for a girl, I find it cute and works well for a tomboy. Alex is also really common, I knew a lot of Alex's in my school years.

I recently conducted a tournament of 320 male names on this site and Alexander won 1st place.
Reaaally common, (most often as Alex) I know it's a very old name but it seems more like a child's name now because there are so many little boys named Alex.

Very nice, masculine name. I also like the nickname Xander.
This is my brother's name, and despite it's commonness, it's still really cool. It's a really common name in Sweden and probably very common across the world. It's the kind of name you give your kid if you want them to have a easy life, and not constantly having to spell out their name or correcting people on the pronunciation of their name.
I love this name. I imagine Alexander as a very sweet little boy and a kind and reliable man who's not afraid to stand up for what he believes in. I'm considering this as a middle name for my future hypothetical son. My last name means "the great" so it would be a little inside-joke that he was literally named Alexander the Great.
For those who dislike pretentious names. Alexander is among them. Though because it is so widely used, it's grown accepted-- unlike something along the lines of "Zeus," which will never be commonly used in the contemporary world... as long as my years will see, at least. It certainly is a nice name to the ear-- but, unfortunately, I believe it to stop there. The world is overrun with "Alex"s mainly because it is an ornate name, and the "-xander" pleases. There are countless names that will courageously stand the test of time. Names that your son will not be an Alex #2 or an Alex #6. He could be the first. Even "Alexander" in a separate language could function... add on a creative nickname and he's good to go.I do not hate, per se. I only believe that it is much less than the show people recite it as. Alexanders, be proud of your name. Be proud that it will not slow your career. Be proud that your parents did not name you Cucumber.
I have loved the name Alexander since I was a teenager spotting it on popularity lists. I also love the name Anna since I was a little girl. I am going to end up naming my daughter and son Anna and Alexander. I like Alexei as a nickname as well! Beautiful!

I adore this name, but I think it's way too common for me to ever use it.
I'm sorry, but Alexander reminds me of a duck. When I was very young my favourite book was this picture book called Alexander the Duck, and it described the adventures of a duck named Alexander as he waddled through Sydney.

I love this name! Alexander is just a really cool name that has charisma!
Very handsome masculine name; I love the fact that it has a long and distinguished history in Scotland, where the name was used by the royal family in the Middle Ages.
Macho origin, though the name's become the prime of trite. Of course, everyone liked it before it became popular. Of course. But, overall, you can't go wrong with Alexander.
I have mixed feelings about this name. It seems to be a popular one for fictional "bad guys" and leaves a slightly slimy taste in my mouth. It's also a very "old country" name to me, which I love. Also, "Alex" is a sniper rifle (awesomeness!), a nickname that comes from it's creator Aleksander. Great name if you're a gun dork.
Number 12 for boys in 2005. I love this name. But I think I prefer the name Alex, as a first name, I would come closer to using Alexander as a middle name than a first name.
I absolutely adore this name! Awesome name to have, gives a very good impression. But not that big a fan of the nickname Alex - I don't think names should really be shortened.

I like the name Alexander because it isn't too rough, but is still strong. I like all the nicknames for it; my favorites are Alec and Sascha. I don't think that Sascha would be very accepted for a boy where I live, though. I do know a lot of Alexanders though. It's a very common name. They all go by Alex.

I think of a strong man, with blond curly hair for some odd reason.
I love this name. It has been one of my top 3 names for boys for as long as I can remember, and it will be the first name I give to my son (if I ever get one). I don't really know why I love this name, I just do. I think it's one of the best names there is.
This is nice name. Unfournately, it's often shortened to Alex, which leaves question of gender. I'd be Alexander if I were I a guy, not Alex.

I find it sad there are great names like this one, and they are used in a short form, like Alex. It's TOO popular! Alexander by itself sounds much stronger, masculine, almost royal.

This name is extremely popular where I live. I personally know three or four people named this just in my grade! I really like the name, and its many nicknames, though all the boys I know just use Alex. So therefore, we call them by their last names instead.
Alexander in Macedonian, Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian is Aleksandar. Beautiful name! That is my brother's name and from him and from the history big percentage of the scientists that "light up" our world with knowledge an inventions are Alexander, Aleksandar. Person that invented the telephone; person that built the Eifel Tower, person that invented the dynamite.
I love this name. I think I have to, my husband's name is Alexander and so is our two year old son. I also agree it shouldn't be messed with like all these new nicknames. I once heard someone calling Xander. I didn't like this nickname. This is a family name so we keep it in its original form Alexander. Awesome name.
Alexander is a nice strong name for a boy. I know a lot of kids with the name Alexander and go by Alex. I like the nickname Zander.

Just like everyone else is saying here, Alexander is a strong and masculine name. This is one of my favorite boy names. It's the name of one of my friends and my Spanish uncle.
Getting really popular and common but it's still a nice name.

Classic and strong-sounding, I know a bearer of this name (my friend's cousin) and it fits his personality. I love this name.
I think this name sounds respectable and virile. But I prefer the name as a whole than the nicknames. It sounds more professional than just Alex or Xan.

I find the name Alexander very masculine and attractive. I can't help but expect certain things of others because of feelings I have about the names they bear, and I must say that I expect good things from any guy who carries this name. It would suit almost any male and I would be proud to give this name to my own son.
