Meaning & History
Means "old helmet", derived from the Germanic elements ald "old" and helm "helmet, protection". However, it should be noted that there are also various cases where this name is a variant form of Adalhelm, due to metathesis. This name was borne by an Anglo-Saxon saint from the 8th century AD. His original name was actually Ealdhelm, but it was often variantly written as Aldhelm.
