Meaning & History
Latinized form of Greek Ἀλκυονεύς (Alkyoneus), which is the masculine form of Alkyone (see Alcyone). This name was borne by four characters in Greek mythology, one of them being a Thracian Giant. In real life, Alcyoneus (also called Halcyoneus) was a son of Antigonus Gonatas, king of Macedonia (3rd century BC).
