Akemi became popular as 明美 (bright + beautiful) entering the top 10 in Japan in 1957. It peaked at #1 in 1965 and left the top 10 after 1968.It is famous for being one of the first names not ending in -ko becoming extremely popular in the 1950s and 1960s after the Japanese top 10 had been dominated by -ko ending names for several decades and therefore changing the trend to names with different endings, a trend that would lead to hardly any names ending in -ko being placed in the top 10 by the 1990s (the only exceptions are Momoko, Nanako and Riko which entered for one year (Nanako) or a few years each).

Akemi Okamura is the Japanese voice actress for Nami in the anime One Piece.
Akemi Cynthia Paule Uchima (Minami Saori is her Screen name amd her real name is Akemi Uchima and her Filipino name is Cynthia) became a famous singer in Japan when she made a hit song "Seventeen Year Old". For years, she has denied the fact that she was born in Okinawa due to Japanese discrimination against Okinawans.
This is a very lovely name. I've spent hours searching for good sounding Japanese names and Akemi probably is one of the best that I have found. A great aspect of this name is that even though it's Japanese it doesn't really step out of the normal by sounding really foreign in America. This is a name that would seem to be more acceptable than Michiko or Katsuhito in a classroom full of first graders. Although that really all depends. Also, Akemi could be a good substitute for Kimberly. They sound alike but mean totally different things. I would for sure consider naming my daughter Akemi. =)
