Meaning & History

Means "white serpent" or "white dragon", derived from Turkic ak meaning "white" combined with Turkic büge or büke meaning "serpent, snake" as well as "dragon" (ultimately from Proto-Turkic böke). Over time, the latter word eventually took on the secondary and figurative meaning of "wise person", due to the fact that the dragon was regarded as a representation of wisdom.

The second element of this name is not to be confused with the derivatives of Proto-Turkic *buka meaning "bull" (see Bugha).

In Turkic mythology, Akbugha is the god of health and healing/medicine.
