Akane (アカネ) is the Japanese name of the Goldenrod City Gym Leader in Pokemon Gold, Silver, Crystal, Heartgold, and Soulsilver. She is known as Whitney in English.
Akane is a beautiful, unique, and interesting choice. The meaning is also really good. Especially for the red lovers out there. Red gives it a sexy feel. What’s best is that it can fit a girl from newborn to elderly. Of course, it’s my friends name, so I have nothing but positives to say about it really.
Thank you so much to the comment below me for spoiling TBHK. Ever considered that people haven't watched/finished/read TB? Anyway, lovely name, love the meaning and the colour.

Akane is one of my friend's name. I have known her for 5 years now. Personally, I wouldn’t name my kid this. But the name is unique and overall nice.
Akane entered the Japanese girls top 10 as 茜 (deep red) in 1993 at #8. This was its only entry in the top 10. It is currently (as of 2018) not in the top 100 anymore.

I have a friend named Akane whose kanjis are 朱峰 (red/vermillion peak). It is an irregular reading, and definitely a one-of-a-kind combination... I'm not sure what the parents mean by giving her that name, though :)
This is a really pretty name. Uncommon, but still attractive to the eye and ear. When I think of this name, I imagine it belonging to a calm and collected, but sarcastic and selfless individual. It is a really sweet and charming name.
The definition is correct, but I just want to point out that there is a more commonly used name pronounced Akane written with a different character, one that means "walk" as in to walk one's own path.
Akane is usually written with the kanji for 'deep red'. But there are many different kanjis for the name, for example Akane can also be written as 'Peaceful Flower Sound', etc. I don`t know a kanji that means 'walk own path' that can be pronounced Akane. Ayumi means 'counter of own steps' or 'walk', but I don't think Akane does.
She's not very well-known to people who don't watch this show or people who don't remember all the episodes, but in the fifteenth episode of CardCaptor Sakura Kero-chan was taken care of by a little girl names Akane. It was one of my favorite episodes! "Chau, chau, chau, chau!"
