Derived from the Greek adjective αἴτιος (aitios) meaning "responsible" as well as "culpable, guilty, blameworthy", which is ultimately derived from the Greek noun αἰτία (aitia) meaning "responsibility" as well as "guilt, blame, accusation". Also compare the Greek verb αἰτέω (aiteo) meaning "to ask, to beg", which is said to be etymologically related to the aforementioned two words.
